Pattern Finding

This handsome fella' needs a new hat.  I'm fairly certain the one pictured above is the only one he owns, and...hmmm...it is on it's very last leg (think strings dangling off).  And, it's not even wool.  I definitely question the true warmth factor.  So, I'm on a mission to a) figure out how to knit with double pointed needles (Yes, I am very afraid!) and b) knit this man a hat.  Here's where I need some help...I'm on the hunt for a good (a.k.a. easy) man's hat pattern.  Now, I know I have some very crafty readers who must have some experience in this realm, so pretty please leave me some links and/or book suggestions.  And, if you're not crafty with needles then you can still cheer me along.  I'm going to need it.  Have I mentioned that I'm scared of double pointed needles?  Well, I am.  Irrational, I know.

  1. I was really nervous about knitting in the round, and using double-pointed needles. Seriously, I had only ever knitted dishcloths! But it was so, so easy. Have no fear! Just don't let your work get twisted, and you'll be totally fine.

    I loved doing this pattern:

I only made the baby hat, so I was able to do the whole thing on dpn's, but I guess for an adult size you'd need circular needles. But I'm seriously thinking of using that pattern for hats for both me and Tom. Seems like it would be super warm, since you could basically double the whole thing over.

I'll look forward to seeing what you decide to make! Just go for it, and have fun!

  2. I only know how to use regular needles.
however. I DO know what a super easy way to knit hats is to buy those plastic circles. They come in different sizes. Just an option if you dont have the gusto to master a new technique!

but either way...GO GO GO Made!!

  4. I really liked starting on the the circular needles and moving to the dpns. It is a bit more costly, but for a first project, it gave me the confidence (and was easy) to join the stitches. I'm in the process of making this hat for my hubby: http://stephanieknits.blogspot.com/2007/03/keeping-boyfriends-ears-warm-since-2006.html

I think it was on SouleMama awhile ago. It's his to-be-finished Christmas present. :) Good Luck!

  7. Oh I must be a bit slow...I tried circular needles for the first time last winter and it scared me away...I just could not get my head around it. I think I will check the link above and not be defeated!
Can't wait to see what you create!
