Gardening

Yesterday we spent a wonderful (albeit rainy) day digging and planting. Since our own yard is not suited to growing much of anything, we helped my mom out with her garden.

You might  not be able to make out the bit of grass that Levi is holding in his mouth. He considers that to be the sign of a farmer. Today he told me in a melancholy voice, "Yesterday I was a farmer, but today I'm not. I don't have a leaf in my mouth."

Both kids were loving it. Okay, so Sophia might have created a few casualties with her enthusiasm, but the learning has to start somewhere, right?

We planted tomatoes, peppers, herbs, cantaloupe, watermelon, and strawberries, and we're planning to add some squash and pumpkins to the mix. How about y'all? Growing anything yummy this summer?

  1. haha...love the grass in his mouth!

Sounds like a lovely garden. So far we've got arugula, broccoli, cabbage, sweet peppers, jalapenos, tomatoes and some basil planted :)

  2. That's one determined farmer you have there!

  3. I didn't plant squash this year...John doesn't care for it in the amounts the plants produce, so we will get that from the farmer's market. We have tomatoes, carrots, okra, green beans, peppers, cucumbers, and one watermelon. (I just realized I don't think the celery is coming up...) The casualties of a little gardener help them learn! How else will they have fun in the dirt? Sometimes I have to reign in the eagerness, like when I realize seeds are being spread willy nilly through the garden. See celery comment above ;-). The most fun is picking the goods when they are ready though!

    1. We're still hoping to put some squash in along with pumpkins. I'm looking forward to when we actually live out there again and can grow more. We were pretty limited by only being able to spend part of a day prepping beds and planting.
Hope your celery survives! Kiddos are pretty efficient at creating garden casualties, but their desire to be there and to help definitely outweighs the veggie losses. :)
