An Attitude Adjustment

Sometimes this whole mommy business is hard...oh...wait...I should rephrase that.  Sometimes this whole life business is hard.  Unfortunately, there's no gettin' around it.  The past few weeks have been less than ideal...mostly due to me.  Funny how so much of the ick in our lives can be traced back to our own attitudes. I've definitely been off kilter lately.  I could blame it on postpartum crud, living in a never ending renovation zone, a grumpy almost 3 year old, and a husband whose work schedule is CRAZY....but, really, it's me.  I've felt a little too sorry for myself and let myself get a little too grumpy and out of sorts.  Earlier in the week, Leigh posted this film trailer on her blog.  The optimism made me cringe...in a good way...because my life is good.  Incredibly good.  Why do I forget that???
Once upon a time, I made it a daily practice to think about the things I was grateful for.  I'm not sure when I dropped that, but I'm taking it back.  Gratitude is a powerful thing.

Today, I'm grateful for a patient, kind, and loving husband.
...for his new and improved, less crazy job schedule (even though it won't start until December)!
...for a bathroom that is so close to finally being finished
...for a little boy who wants to be just like his "Daddy Stephan"

...

...for a little girl who purses her lips ALL the time (just like her mama used to do)

...
...for a beautiful autumn day
...for parents who brought over dinner (Thank you!)
...for the grin on Levi's face when he opened a piece of mail just for him (a birthday card)
...for moments that make me laugh

...

...and, for love.

What are you grateful for?

  1. I feel like I have been grumbling a lot lately. Thank you for reminding me to take the time to think about all of the things I am grateful for. I feel a more positive blog post coming on soon. :)

  3. I just cannot stop thinking about Alice. Yesterday was rotten: My wallet stolen, a downstairs neighbor with a new drum set, plus all the usual crap that's hard when you have two toddlers. But I just kept thinking about Alice, and I have to say she inspired me to be grateful for all the good, rather than mired in anger about the bad. I want to be like her.

  4. PS: I think there might just BE something to all this positivity: http://www.ktbs.com/health/25636852/detail.html

  5. You are amazing. I can definitely relate to having an attitude! And hey, my master bathroom has been under construction for five years. Pretty much unusable! That's plenty right there to make a mama grumpy.... But of course, you are right, gratitude is the right attitude. I am grateful for having a husband for 15 years who is also my best friend, for being able to stay home with my boys and for living in this great place.

  6. As I read your post Audrey came over to me and asked to breastfeed.

I am grateful for my little one and the chance I have right this second to hold and feed her.

  7. Leigh, I agree. I want to be like her too! Her attitude is so inspiring. So much of what we get out of life really is about the attitude we choose to have.

  8. There is so much truth in this post. I especially related to this line: "Funny how so much of the ick in our lives can be traced back to our own attitudes."

Thank you for this excellent exhortation that so much of life is a choice.

  9. I get really grumpy sometimes about how tight our finances are while we still have a house on the market in Memphis. But then I think about they joy I get each and every day being home with Darah. Keep the money...this is SOOOO much better!

  10. I've been feeling like such a grumpy mama for the past few months. Always stressed out and feeling like I can't catch up with life. Something's gotta give.

Thanks for the reminder to focus on gratitude and our life's blessings.
